Remake

I selected a look from Mugler’s S/S 97 ‘Les Insectes’ collection to reinterpret. Attracted by the interesting patterning, and hand sewn pieces, I began working out the patterns. Using faux leather, I created a corset and skirt to mirror the original design. To mimic the hardware on the original piece; the rivets, I looked to my own resources and used paper split pins and spray painted them black. This gave me a very similar effect.

I used a leather punch and hammer to create holes along the edges of each piece. This allowed me to thread a strip of leather through each hole, then bind it all together. This was very tedious, but the effect was exactly what I was aiming for. This was the technique I used for the whole piece. The only machine sewn piece being the mesh skirt.

Though, not a perfect recreation of the Mugler piece, this reimagined piece emulated the creepy atmosphere of the ‘Les Insectes’ 1997 show.
